How the Evolution of the Credit Card Has Led to Bankruptcies

Believe it or not there was once a time when not everyone possessed a credit card. In fact, only the most privileged of society even bothered paying with credit over cash. Coincidentally, this was also a time when consumer bankruptcy cases were incredibly low and the economy was not in a recession. However, the ubiquitous presence of credit cards in this day and age has led to plenty of negative consequences, including a spike in bankruptcy cases.

Somewhere along the line, credit card offers began flooding the mailboxes of every Joe and Jane on the block. More specifically, credit card companies started offering cards to college students on campuses all over the country. The ability to buy things without using assets right away was very attractive to young people, but many did not realize the repercussions associated with spending in bunches and paying it back later.

Bankruptcy in Numbers

People from all walks of life suffer from credit card debt. It multiplies under high interest rates and can morph into an untamable beast that can just not be paid for. If this is the case with you then it is time to seek help immediately. Chances are you will need credit to make major purchases throughout your life so it is crucial to repair damaged credit that comes with abusing your credit card.

So where to start? The best place is at a credit counselor’s office to go over whether or not a debt solution alternative such as debt management or debt consolidation is an option for you. If not, then it is time to contact a local bankruptcy attorney. He or she should be able to tell you whether Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy is in your future. From there you can start the paperwork and get that much closed to a second chance at using credit cards responsibly.
